Kitija Ozolina · Awareness Mentor for Mothers
Not how you love a partner, how you are with your children. It is different. And it tells you something.
The way you connect to people. How you handle closeness, distance, conflict, uncertainty. That was all shaped before you had words for it.
This is about understanding what got shaped and why it matters as a mother.
None of these patterns are a verdict. They all developed for reasons. Real ones. Seeing yours is not about blame. yours or your mother's. It is about knowing which way you tend to lean, so you can lean a little differently when you want to.
Read each one. Notice which one feels familiar. not comfortable, just familiar.
Secure
You can hold their emotions without being pulled completely under. Not because you have no feelings. because somewhere you learned that feelings pass, that closeness is safe, that you can move toward someone in distress. This did not happen automatically. Someone probably gave this to you first.
Anxious
Their emotions become yours, fast. You are highly attuned. you notice everything. but the line between you and them is thin. Their distress lands in your body almost before it lands in theirs. This likely came from somewhere where closeness felt unpredictable and you learned to track other people's moods as a way of staying safe.
Avoidant
Big emotions are uncomfortable. yours and theirs. You want to help but the intensity of feelings, especially distress, sends something in you toward distance. Let's be practical. Let's fix it. Let's move on. This is not coldness. It is what managing looks like when you were not shown how to be with big feelings.
Mixed. sometimes close, sometimes far
Inconsistency is its own pattern. Some days you are all the way in. present, warm, available. Other days something shuts off and you do not fully know why. This often comes from early experiences that were themselves inconsistent. Your nervous system is still trying to work out which way is safe.
Attachment patterns are not fixed. They formed in relationship. and they can shift in relationship. Not all at once. Not through deciding to be different. But through noticing the moment your pattern kicks in, and choosing. even just once. to do something slightly different.
When your child is distressed and your instinct is to fix it fast, you can pause. Stay. Let them feel it with you beside them. One moment. That is where it starts to move.
You do not need to be a secure mother all the time. You just need to be able to repair when you have not been.
The way you attach is not a flaw. It is a map of what you survived.
Seeing the map is the first step to choosing a different route.
Which pattern feels most like home, even when it isn't comfortable?
With love, Kitija 🤍
