It is not bad taste. It is not bad luck. There is something else underneath.
You end up in the same dynamic again. Different person. Same feeling. You swore it would be different this time.
This is why that happens and how it starts to change.
You did not do this on purpose.
You were following the only map you had. The one that was drawn for you before you were old enough to know it was being drawn.
Your nervous system does not evaluate relationships the way your mind does. It does not make a pros and cons list. It reads for something much faster: does this feel familiar?
Familiar does not mean good. It does not mean healthy. It just means recognisable. And what your nervous system recognises as love. the specific texture of it, the emotional temperature. was set early. Before you had a say.
So when someone shows up and creates that feeling. the pull, the intensity, the electricity. your body reads it as: yes. This is the one.
Even when the mind starts to have doubts.
This is the part that is hard to hear. I think it was hard for me because I wanted to believe that the right person would change everything.
Sometimes the dynamic changes. Sometimes it doesn't. Because the dynamic is not only coming from the other person. it is coming from inside both people. What you bring. What they bring. What happens when those two things meet.
You can leave someone who pursues and pulls, and end up with someone who does the exact same thing in a slightly different form. Because that is what you have learned to recognise as love. Because your body steers toward it without asking permission.
I think people hear "familiar" and assume it means warm. Safe. Nice.
Chemistry isn't always compatibility. Sometimes it's familiarity.
It doesn't. Familiar means recognisable. Your nervous system can feel at home in tension. In unpredictability. In being the one who loves more. In waiting to be chosen. If that is what home felt like, the nervous system reads it as where I belong.
That is not broken. That is just what learning feels like when you do not have a choice in the lesson.
Four forms the same wound takes in relationships.
The pull toward unavailability.
Someone keeps themselves just out of reach. You keep reaching. The distance feels like longing. but it is actually a very old ache dressed up as desire. You were drawn not to them, but to the feeling of trying to be chosen.
The intensity that feels like love.
The highs and lows. The electricity. The feeling that something enormous is at stake. This is not passion. this is a nervous system in a state of activation reading urgency as connection. Calm, steady love can feel boring at first. That is the body adjusting to something new.
Needing to fix someone.
You are drawn to people who need something from you. People who are struggling, who need holding together, who need rescuing in some quiet way. You know how to be needed. Needing felt dangerous once. Being needed feels like a reason to stay.
Someone who confirms the wound.
This one is the hardest to see. You end up with people who, in some way, repeat the original message. That you are too much. Not quite enough. Interchangeable. And some part of you recognises that message. because you have been hearing it for so long it feels like truth.
You are not drawn to pain. You are drawn to the familiar. They happened to be the same.
Seeing the pattern is the first shift. Not a solution. just a light on. Once you can see it, you have a choice you didn't have before.
What has felt familiar about the dynamics you keep finding yourself in?
With love, Kitija 🤍
