10 Beliefs You Inherited That Are No Longer True

You did not choose them. They were handed to you before you had words for them. Some kept you safe then. They are costing you now.

Some of the thoughts you have about yourself feel completely true. Not like beliefs. Like facts.

This is about the ones that were put there a long time ago, and how to start questioning them.

Before you read: noticing a belief doesn't mean you have to fix it today. It doesn't mean you're broken for having it. It means you're looking. That's already something.

If several land at once. that's not a diagnosis. That's just a lot of recognition in one place. Go gently.

01

I have to earn my rest.

This came from homes where stillness felt uncomfortable. Where being busy meant you were worth something. You learned that rest is a reward, not a right. Your body has been waiting for permission ever since.

02

If I am not useful, I am not enough.

Maybe you were the capable one. The helper. The one everyone leaned on. You learned that love came when you were needed. Just existing. with nothing to offer. was never quite enough.

03

Wanting too much is selfish.

Someone said it, or showed it, or made you feel small for wanting. So you shrunk your wanting. Told yourself you were fine with less. You are still doing it. The wanting didn't go away. it just went underground.

04

My feelings are too much for other people.

Maybe someone left the room when you cried. Maybe you were asked to stop. You learned to manage alone. To hold it in. To apologise for feeling at all. So now you do. even when no one is asking you to.

05

If I say no, I will lose them.

Love in your family might have felt conditional. Approval came when you went along. So no felt like a risk. then and now. Even when the people around you now are safe, the pull is still there.

06

Good women put themselves last.

Passed down through generations of women who had no other option. It looked like love. It was survival. And somehow it became the rule you live by. not because you chose it, but because no one ever told you it was a choice.

07

Being different from my family is a betrayal.

When you started doing things differently. thinking differently, wanting differently. something in you braced. Belonging felt like sameness. Changing felt like leaving. That pull is still real, even when the people you love say they want you to be happy.

08

I have to have it together before I ask for help.

Asking might have felt like weakness, or burden, or proof you couldn't cope. So you wait until you're drowning. Then you apologise for needing to be pulled out. And you make it smaller than it was so it's easier for them.

09

Anger is dangerous. Or unfeminine.

Someone's anger scared you. Or your own anger was shut down. smoothed over, redirected, punished. Either way, you learned that anger is a problem. So it goes somewhere else. Your body. Your silence. The wrong person on the wrong day.

10

I am responsible for how other people feel.

Maybe keeping someone calm was your job when you were young. Maybe you learned to read the room before you entered it. You are still doing that. feeling their feelings before they have a chance to feel them themselves, trying to manage what hasn't happened yet.

If several landed at once

That's not unusual. Most of us carry a cluster, not just one. And a lot of them are connected. the same original message, showing up in different clothes.

You are not behind for still carrying these. I still find them in myself. The work isn't to remove them all at once. It's to notice them. one moment at a time.

One next step

Pick one belief that landed. Just one. This week, when you notice it running. the yes you didn't want to give, the rest you can't let yourself take. try asking:

Did I choose this? Or did I inherit it?

You don't have to answer it right away. Just let the question be there.

The belief is not you. It just arrived early, before you could question it.

I'm still finding mine. Some I've put down. Some I still carry. But I know the difference now between what I chose and what I inherited. That knowing changes things.

Which belief did you inherit that you've never actually chosen?

With love, Kitija 🤍
