What Healing Actually Looks Like (It's Not What They Show You)

And what it is not.

You thought healing would feel like things lifting. Like peace arriving. It often does not. Some days it feels like going backwards.

This is what it actually looks like.

You do not have to cut anyone off. You do not have to forgive before you are ready. You do not have to be at peace with any of it to begin.

You can start exactly where you are. with the anger, with the confusion, with the not knowing what it all means. That is allowed.

What healing is not

It is not a destination you arrive at. Not a before and after. Not a moment where everything finally makes sense and you feel okay forever.

It is not cutting off your family, or forgiving people who have not taken responsibility, or performing peace you do not feel. It is not talking about your childhood constantly or never talking about it. It is not crying at the right moments or not crying at all.

It is not being done. I don't think healing has a finish line.

Five signs you are healing. even when it doesn't feel like it

Not the dramatic signs. The quiet ones that are easy to miss.

You catch yourself before the old response arrives.

Not every time. Not even most times. But sometimes. there is a pause that was not there before. A moment of noticing. You still might do the old thing. But you see it now. That gap between trigger and reaction is where everything changes.

Something that used to flatten you only hurts now.

It still lands. You still feel it. But you are not on the floor. The shape of the wound is the same. the depth is different. That is not nothing. That is the body reorganising around something it used to be completely undefended against.

You are gentler with yourself after you mess up.

The self-punishment is shorter. The spiral lasts less time. You still see what happened. you are not making excuses. but the part that used to say you are terrible and irredeemable is quieter than it was. That quieter voice is the work showing up.

You can feel your own feelings without immediately leaving them.

Something hurts and you stay with it for a moment instead of immediately reaching for the thing that numbs it. Something good happens and you let yourself feel it instead of bracing for it to go away. Tolerance for your own inner life. that is a sign of change.

You want something different for your children.

Not just vaguely. You notice when you almost repeat the pattern. You catch yourself. You repair. Even imperfectly, even late. you go back and say something different. That choosing again, over and over, in the small moments. that is what the next generation inherits instead.

You won't feel healed. You'll just notice one day that something moved.

And then you'll notice it again. And again. Until one day the distance between who you were and who you are is something you can actually see.

What does healing look like in your life today, even in the smallest way?

With love, Kitija 🤍
