The Parts of You That You Hide (Even From Yourself)

The anger. The need. The ambition. They didn't disappear when you hid them. They just found another way out.

You have been careful. Careful not to be too much. Too loud. Too honest. It worked. Nobody left.

But something else is happening underneath. This is what hiding yourself actually costs.

Whatever you hid. you hid it for a reason. It was unsafe, or unacceptable, or it cost you something every time it showed.

That was not a failure of character. That was intelligent adaptation. The problem is not that you hid it. The problem is that it's still there. still waiting. and you're not on speaking terms with it.

Why parts get hidden.

A child shows something of herself. anger, need, ambition, grief. and the response is: not this. Not here. Not now. Or nothing at all. Silence. Discomfort. Someone leaving the room.

The child files that information. This part of me is not welcome. This part makes things worse. This part is too much, or too strange, or too threatening.

So she hides it. Not because she decided to. Because she was smart enough to read the room and survive in it.

The hiding becomes habitual. The part gets pushed further and further from conscious awareness until the woman doesn't even know it's there. She just knows she sometimes reacts in ways she doesn't understand. Has strong feelings about things in others that she can't fully explain. Finds herself doing things she didn't consciously choose.

That is the hidden part, still moving. Still trying to exist. Just sideways.

What happens to the parts you push away.

They leak. That is the most accurate word I have found.

The anger you don't express becomes resentment. Becomes sarcasm. Becomes exhaustion that doesn't match how tired you should be. Becomes the reactions that surprise you. the sharp word that comes out before you have chosen it.

The need you deny becomes a constant background hunger. A feeling of never quite having enough. Of waiting for something you can't name. Of being disappointed in situations that should be fine.

And the hidden parts show up in what you judge in others. The quality you cannot stand in someone else. the neediness, the aggression, the shameless ambition. is often something you have pushed out of yourself. Not always. But often enough that it's worth looking at when something in someone else bothers you more than it should.

Five parts that commonly get hidden.

You might recognise one. Or more than one.

The anger

Hidden because it scared people. Or scared you. It comes out sideways now. in withdrawal, in sarcasm, in exhaustion, in the things you say under your breath.

The need

Hidden because needing felt like a burden. Like too much. Like something that pushed people away. So you became the one who needed nothing, and quietly starved.

The ambition

Hidden because wanting more felt selfish, or threatening, or like it would take you somewhere that left others behind. So you played it small. Called it a hobby. Stopped before it became real.

The grief

Hidden because there was always something more urgent. Because being sad felt like it would never stop. Because no one had space for it. So it went somewhere else inside you.

The sexuality

Hidden because it felt dangerous, or wrong, or like something that belonged to a version of you that wasn't allowed. Still there. Just quiet. Just waiting.

What it means to start letting them back in.

Not all at once. Not dramatically. This is not about an uncaging.

It starts with noticing. Catching a reaction and being curious about it instead of dismissing it. Feeling the heat in your chest and wondering what's underneath it instead of swallowing it down.

It might be asking: if I were allowed to be angry right now, what would I be angry about? If I were allowed to need something, what would it be?

The parts that were hidden don't need to be performed. They need to be acknowledged. Seen. Let into the room, at least internally, at least by you.

When I started doing this. even just asking the question quietly. things that used to leak sideways started to feel like they had somewhere to be. Less pressure. Less mystery in my own reactions.

I'm still not done. I still find things I didn't know were there. That is not a failure. That is just what this looks like from the inside.

Nothing in you needs to be cut off. Just seen.

The parts you've hidden were waiting for it to be safe. Maybe it's starting to be.

What part of you have you been keeping quietest?

With love, Kitija 🤍
