The Cycle-Breaker's Map

It is not linear. It does not go in a straight line. Here are the 4 stages, and what it actually looks like to move through them.

Some days you feel like you are going backwards. Some days you cannot tell if what you are feeling is progress or just pain with a different shape.

That is not failure. That is what this actually looks like from the inside.

Here are the four stages most mothers move through, and what it looks like to be in each one.

You are not moving through these in order. You are not moving through them once. You might be in two at the same time. You might circle back to one you thought you had left.

You are not behind. You are not doing it wrong. This is what it looks like.

STAGE 01

Seeing

The moment the pattern becomes visible.

It often hurts. That's how you know it's real.

One day something happens. a fight, a moment with your child, something someone says. and you see it. The pattern that has been running underneath your whole life, quietly, invisibly. And now you cannot unsee it.

Seeing is not the same as healing. It is not fixing anything. But it is the whole beginning. Before you see it, you cannot do anything with it. After you see it, you have a choice. even a tiny one.

I still remember when I first saw one of mine. I thought I was just having a bad week. I wasn't. I was seeing something I had been carrying for decades.

STAGE 02

Grieving

Mourning what you did not get. and what you passed on before you knew.

This is the one no one warns you about.

When you start to see the patterns, grief comes with it. Grief for the childhood you didn't have. Grief for the mother you needed and didn't get. Grief for the moments with your own children before you knew what you now know.

That last one is the heaviest. The times you reacted in ways you didn't want to. The things you said that you can't take back. The pattern you passed on before you could see it.

This grief is not evidence that you failed. It is evidence that you love. your children, and the child you once were. You are allowed to feel it. There is no timeline for it.

STAGE 03

Choosing

The small, imperfect, everyday decisions to do it differently.

This is where the work lives. Not in insight. Not in awareness alone. In the ordinary Tuesday afternoon moment when you feel the old pattern pulling and you pause for half a second and do something different.

It doesn't have to be dramatic. It rarely is. It might be that you take a breath before you respond. That you say "I need a minute" instead of snapping. That you let yourself rest without earning it first.

These moments are small. They don't feel like cycle-breaking. They feel like barely holding on. But they are the whole thing. Each one is a choice the women before you couldn't make. not because they didn't want to, but because no one had ever shown them it was possible.

STAGE 04

Returning

The pattern comes back. You choose again.

This is the part that confuses people. They thought once you see it, grieve it, and choose differently a few times. it's done. It's not done.

When you are tired, or scared, or overwhelmed. when your nervous system is flooded and your child is pushing every button. the old pattern comes back. Fast. Familiar.

This is not failure. This is not going backwards. The pattern has been there longer than the new choice has. Of course it returns.

This stage is called Returning because it requires you to return too. Back to choosing. Back to seeing. The cycle does not break in a single moment. It breaks across thousands of small returns.

How they connect

These stages are not separate rooms you move through and lock behind you. They are more like weather. You can be in sun and then in rain and then in sun again in the same afternoon.

The goal is not to reach the end. The goal is to keep returning to Choosing. Every time you return, the distance between the pattern and your response gets a little bigger. That is how cycles break. not in one dramatic moment. In thousands of tiny ones.

One next step

Look at the four stages. Just notice: where do you think you are right now? Not where you want to be. Where you actually are.

Name it. That's enough for today.

Knowing where you are is not the same as being stuck there. It's the first condition for being able to move.

You are not behind. You are not doing it wrong. You are somewhere on this map.

The returning is not failure. The returning is the work.

Which step feels most relevant to where you are right now?

With love, Kitija 🤍
