Readiness does not look like being prepared. It looks like what is already happening inside you.
Readiness does not always feel like readiness. Sometimes it feels like exhaustion. Frustration. A quiet knowing that something has to change.
Here are seven signs it is already happening.
You do not have to feel all seven. One or two. really felt, not just intellectually agreed with. is enough. Readiness is not a score. It is a direction.
01
Old coping feels hollow.
The thing that used to take the edge off. the wine, the scrolling, the busyness, the food, the planning, the reorganising. it still happens. You still do it. But it does not really work the way it used to. You come out the other side and the feeling is still there. Coping strategies stop working when the thing underneath them is asking to be dealt with directly. That is not a sign of weakness. That is your system saying: this does not cut it anymore.
02
You catch yourself mid-pattern.
You are in the middle of doing the thing. shutting down, over-explaining, saying yes when you mean no, managing when you were not asked to. and you notice. Not in hindsight. In the moment. There is a small part of you watching and naming it: there it is again. That gap between the pattern and the noticing. that is new. That is a sign that something is growing.
03
Irritated by the life that should be fine.
Nothing is wrong. By every reasonable measure, your life is fine. And yet there is a friction. a low-grade irritation you cannot explain. You are grateful and still restless. You count your blessings and still feel something hollow underneath them. That is not ingratitude. That is the feeling of being a fuller person than your current life has room for.
04
Asking questions you cannot un-ask.
Is this it? Is this the life I am building? What do I actually want? Who am I outside of all the roles I play? You cannot go back to not wondering. The questions have woken up. You can ignore them, but they do not leave. they just go quiet for a while and come back louder. That is not anxiety. That is a real question that deserves a real answer.
05
Feeling something without a word for it.
Something in the chest. A kind of ache that is not quite sadness, not quite longing, not quite grief. You reach for the word and it is not quite right. Whatever it is, it comes at quiet moments. in the car, in the shower, right before sleep. It is not a crisis. It is more like something pressing gently on a door from the inside.
06
Tired in a way sleep doesn't fix.
You sleep and wake up still tired. Not the tiredness of too much to do. though that too. This is deeper. A tiredness from carrying something for a long time. From performing okay when you are not quite okay. From holding the shape of a life that does not fully fit. That kind of tired does not respond to rest. It responds to honesty.
07
You're here, reading this.
You found this. You opened it. You read this far. That is not nothing. that is something in you going toward an answer rather than away from the question. You did not arrive here by accident. Something in you is already moving.
Readiness is not a decision you make before you start. It is something you notice in hindsight. you were already ready before you knew it.
If you recognise yourself in any of these, even one, you are closer than you think.
"Readiness doesn't feel like certainty. It feels like this."
You do not have to be sure. You just have to be honest about what you are already feeling.
Which of these seven feels most true right now?
With love, Kitija 🤍
